WhatsApp is set to join the long list of companies that are trying to give their users a payment option. As reported recently, the chat-based network is expected to roll out a new feature allowing WhatsApp users to make fund transfers from within the app itself. The feature that the company has apparently been working on for the past few months may see the limelight in the coming months and what’s more, thanks to its largest user base in the country, WhatsApp will roll it out first in India.
WhatsApp Pay is currently being in its final testing process as the new feature is supposed to be renamed. Reports also disclose that the Facebook-owned company has connected to the app as bank partners with SBI, ICICI and HDFC, which will basically operate on a UPI-based payment method. The app will show up a’ Rupees ‘ symbol in a WhatsApp chat under the’ Attachment’ function. Using this, users can make fund transfers by entering the amount to be transferred and the UPI PIN through a simple one-step process. The additional benefit is that users will not have to leave the chat screens to make the payments.
A similar trend has been embraced by WhatsApp-WeChat’s Chinese counterpart. WeChat has launched a payment option for its users as a chat platform and has since become a major player in the payments industry. If WhatsApp is able to efficiently carry out this feature, it could become a tough competitor for India’s existing payment platforms like Paytm, Mobikwik and others.
